Karstic landscapes are shaped by the geomorphic work of water on a carbonate bedrock, with various mechanisms taking place at aquifer, soil subsurface, and surface flow level. Due to the water and sediment flow discontinuities introduced by the unpredictable location, dimensions, and geometry of the karst formations, monitoring and modeling relevant hydrologic and biogeochemical regimes poses a great scientific and engineering challenge. Therefore, studying flow connectivity within such watersheds is a key factor to understanding both the landforms and the components of the local hydrological cycle. This is relevant from a pure scientific approach but it is also definitive for designing sustainable water resources management.
Under this theme, a Connecteur COST Meeting is organised in Chania and Omalos, Crete, Greece during 14-17 March 2018.
Travelling to Chania for the Connecteur COST Meeting:
International travel options
Chania “Daskalogiannis” Airport (CHQ) is the local airport, located about 30 minutes from downtown (hotel and venue). If for some reason this is not an option, try Heraklion “Kazantzakis” Airport (HER), but keep in mind it’s 3 hours away by bus from Chania. If better flight connections are available for HER more detailed info about transportation to Chania can be provided.
Greek airline carrier is Aegean Airlines and operates at least 5 flights a day from the mainland. Keep in mind that Chania is a hub for Ryan Air and Heraklion for Easyjet. This year Ryan has interrupted flights to Chania until March 25 but there’s a slim chance that this changes.
Local travel options
Once in CHQ airport, there are four alternatives to reach the city center (hotels/venue):
- Public transportation: Bus (Cost 2.3€). Take the exit on the right (see Figure) that takes you in front of the bus stop. You can ask for information/purchase tickets at the kiosk or in the bus. The bus schedule is available here: http://bus-service-crete.com/timetabledet.php?line=32&lg=2 .The bus will take you to the central station from where you can walk (1km – 12 minutes) or take a taxi. - Taxi (16€ flat rate from the taxi station): Take the exit to the taxi station (see picture) and ask to go to downtown (about 20-minute drive). If in doubt about the fare reference the price-list http://www.chaniataxi.gr/en/pricelist/ under “Chania city (all areas)”. Fares are also on a notice board at the taxi station. You should be able to split a cab or book in advance for one or more passengers (e.g. starcretetransfers.gr)
- Taxi (22 € flat rate pre-booked): same as above or someone waiting for you at arrivals http://www.chaniataxi.gr/eshop/chania-city-all-areas.html. You should be able to split a cab.
- By car: Available car rental companies at the airport.
